Whenever new money arrives — a bonus, tax refund, inheritance, business profit, or even a modest raise — most people feel a rush of excitement and immediately ask, “What should I buy?” or “Where’s the hot tip?”
ask a completely different question: “Where does this fit inside my existing structure?” They follow a single, repeatable, almost boring decision tree that has protected more new wealth than any “genius” trade ever could. This tree is the reason quiet millionaires stay millionaires while lottery winners and sudden windfall recipients often end up broke within years.
The Five-Step Decision Tree (Memorize It)
Step 1: Capture the Full , Then Kill High-Interest Debt. First, contribute enough to your or similar plan to get the full employer match. An instant 50–100% match beats paying down even a 22% card. Then attack: any debt costing 8% or more (credit cards, personal loans, high-interest car loans) is a guaranteed negative return. Paying it off is mathematically better than almost any investment. Example: $10,000 at 22% credit card interest costs you $2,200 a year. Paying it off is a guaranteed, risk-free 22% return.
If you are still carrying debt above 8%, use Book 1, Guerrilla Warfare Against Debt, to run that step. It gives you the full method: highest interest rate first, a , and a 90-day assault plan.
Step 2: Complete or Top-Off the . If your emergency liquidity is below 6 months of , fill it. You cannot invest wisely from a position of fear. Households without a Fortress panic-sell at market bottoms. Households with a Fortress buy when everyone else is terrified.
Step 3: Capture Every Remaining Tax Advantage. The employer match was already captured in Step 1. Now fund your (HSA) and (IRA), raise your 401(k) (a United States employer retirement plan) contribution toward the annual limit, and use any government incentives.
Step 4: Deploy into the (). After high-interest debt is gone, the Fortress is funded, and are maximized, the majority of remaining capital should go into a simple, low-cost, broadly diversified index portfolio.
This is the long-term compounding engine of the entire system.
We will fully explain how to build and manage this Core Portfolio in Chapter 11. For now, understand that this step means directing most new capital into broad market index funds rather than individual stocks or complex products.
Step 5: Only (Last and Limited). Only after the first four steps are complete do you allocate the final 5–10% to higher-risk, higher-reward bets: individual stocks, private deals, crypto, real estate syndications, or a friend’s startup. Rule: if losing every penny in this sleeve would not change your lifestyle, retirement date, or children’s education, then (and only then) you may play.
The Tree in Action: Worked Examples
- $12,000 bonus: pay off a $4,000 credit card, add $5,000 to the , maximize the remaining contribution, and put the rest into . Zero goes to “fun money” until the tree is satisfied.
- $150,000 inheritance: clear all high-interest debt, fill the Fortress to 6 months, maximize all retirement accounts, put the bulk of the remainder into taxable brokerage index funds, and put a small slice into vetted private real estate.
- $3,000 side-hustle profit: same tree, smaller scale. The discipline scales.
Why Most People Fail This Test. They jump straight to Step 5. They buy the watch, the car, the “sure thing” stock, or lend it to family. The tree protects you from yourself.
Exact Implementation Rules
- Print or save a one-page copy of the tree and keep it in your financial folder or phone.
- When any new capital arrives, force yourself to walk the steps in order — no skipping.
- Review the tree every January 1 and after any windfall larger than one month’s income.
Actions
- Print or create your physical card today and place it with your audit numbers.
- Identify the next expected cash inflow (bonus, refund, client payment) and pre-plan exactly where every dollar will go.
- Make one small deployment right now (even $100) following the tree to shift your identity from “thinking about wealth” to “being an owner.”
Scripts
- To a family member asking for a loan: “I follow a strict structure for all new capital and personal loans are not part of it. I’m happy to help you build your own plan instead.”
- To a friend with a “hot deal”: “I’m a deliberately boring investor. Everything goes through my written decision tree first. Send me the docs and I’ll review on the next cycle.”
- When you feel the urge to splurge: “Is this worth breaking the tree? If not, the tree stays intact.”
DRILL
Field Test
The next time any money above $200 enters your life, walk it through the tree out loud or in writing before touching it. Feel the pride and control that comes from following process instead of impulse.
Journal
Why am I secretly in a hurry to get rich quickly? What am I afraid will happen if wealth takes the patient, tree-guided path instead?
Rule
The Decision Tree Rule: Structure first. Safety second. Growth third. Bets last. Never skip a step. Master this tree and every future windfall becomes another brick in your instead of another leak in your bucket. do not get lucky with money. They get disciplined with it. Now you do too.
